The first Chapter

The Shadow of the Mirror
By: Cassey
All the candles were out and the little children were in their beds drifting off to an undisturbed sleep, none of them knowing that outside their windows a frightening scene that was about to take place.

Chapter 1

Charlotte was finally turning 14, the grand year where she will be looking for a husband. This to most teenage girls meant many young men looking at her either in curiosity or in deep interest. Charlotte had been looking forward to this day ever since she saw her older cousin Bartha get married. It was a beautiful day and there was not a cloud in sight...
"Bartha come on you will be late if you don’t hurry up" spoke the house cleaner in a very tense voice. "Are you trying to give yourself a heart attack? Really I will be there besides this is my wedding day after all now isn’t it?" Bartha was 16 years old, a little tall for her age, with gorgeous long brunette hair that fell down to her waist, and a calm face with green eyes that would send any man into frenzy and which they all did. The whole town looked at her in awe every time she walked by. However, to herself she thought she was just amateur, not that interesting but soon she met a man that turned her world upside down and stole her heart. His name was Harvey Mathews. He was a handsome young man about the same age as Bartha but a few months in difference. And he had a very loving heart. He would take Bartha on romantic walks, and dinners, or they would just talk for hours. At first, the couple thought that they were just a fling, something that was too serious for what it actually was. Nevertheless, after about three months of romance they realized that they were meant for each other. Harvey proposed to her under a young cherry tree just when it was in full blossom. He had planned it for a while but he was not ready until he saw the look in her eyes that night by the cherry tree, and naturally, he had kept the ring with him, waiting for the precise moment to ask her. When he did, Bartha knew the answer right away, she had actually been hoping for him to ask for quite some time, so when he did there was no hesitation. They chose to get married in the early spring mostly because Bartha liked the first little signs of flowers on the ground, and Harvey, he just liked the way her face glowed when she talked about all her favorite things. The excitement of the wedding flowed through the town like wild fire, and naturally, everyone was invited. It was to be the most extravagant affair of the year. And it was, daffodils were scattered over every table, and chair. The cake was beautiful. It was a golden yellow with pearls and daffodils wrapped around like a warm coat and stood on top was the man and woman, who looked so close to Bartha and Harvey it was astonishing. The church was filled, mostly with the town but also with all of the friends and family of the bride and groom, all were excited for the sight of the young bride. And as Bartha walked down the aisle every man women and child turned and their faces received an automatic smile. However, Bartha wasn’t looking at the people sitting in the neatly decorated chairs, her eyes were fixed on the man at the end of the aisle smiling so wide she couldn’t help but do the same. The ceremony lasted for half of an hour and then all the guests walked down to the reception that was being held at Bartha’s aunt’s house. The house was decorated with Bartha’s favorite colors and flowers. The night seemed as a dream, the young couple danced and celebrated the start of their lives together. Their carriage picked them up and took them to their small but moderate home. The night went, on the guests started to thin and soon it was just the family left for the cleaning up. Bartha’s mother, Elizabeth  looked around the room at all the left over’s and she noticed in the corner of the room was a small figure, as she walked over she saw that the small figure turned out to be her 12 year old niece Charlotte. Elizabeth placed her hand on Charlotte’s shoulders, Charlotte slowly looked up, and when she saw the person the hand was connected to she smiled bright and said, "The ceremony was lovely and I liked the reception it was nice.( Charlotte have a little sigh). I hope you will help me on my wedding if it happens…” Elizabeth looked up at her young niece, she knew that feeling all too well, she understood what it felt like when a girl was of that age where all around her is changing a little too fast for her young heart to catch up. Nevertheless, she also understood that Charlotte was a very beautiful girl, and that Charlotte would not have trouble getting any man’s attention when the time came. Elizabeth laughed to herself, placed her long finger to the girl’s chin, and lifted it up for her to look right into Charlotte’s deep blue eyes. “You know I love you Charlotte, and everything I tell you is from my heart and is the honest truth?” Charlotte, knowing where this was going, nodded. “So when I tell you that you are being foolish you know what I am intending?” Again, Charlotte nodded. “I know you will find someone to love you just as Bartha and Harvey have, and you will have that grand wedding that I know you have been planning for years, and you two will have a hundred children and you will live happily ever after, so no more of this “if” nonsense ok.” Releasing a small giggle Charlotte replied. “Ok.” “Now I think it is time to go and help your mother with the china.”Charlotte’s face grimace. “Oh, it is not all that bad just know when you get married you can just hire a maid to do all of the chores or you can just boss that brand new husband of yours around.” Laughing, the two women grasped each other’s hands and skipped, like little children; into the kitchen where they met a tall, thick stack of dishes that they knew had their names on it.
